Apple Danish
Pastry:
3 cups flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup shortening
1 egg yolk
½ cup milk
1 egg white, lightly beaten
Filling:
6 cups sliced peeled apples
1 ½ cup sugar
¼ cup melted butter
2 tablespoons flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Glaze:
½ cup powdered sugar
2-3 teaspoons water
Preheat oven to 375. In mixing bowl combine flour and salt; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Combine egg yolk and milk and add to flour mixture. Stir just until dough clings together. Divide dough in half. On floured surface roll half of the dough into a 10x15 rectangle; transfer to a greased 10 x 15 pan; set aside. Toss together filling ingredients and spoon over pastry in pan. Roll out remaining dough to 10x15 and place over filling. Brush with egg white. Bake 40 minutes at 375. Cool on wire rack. Combine powdered and sugar to drizzle consistency; drizzle over warm pastry.
